Script of medieval documents
This is a full-day course which include the basic theory for the development of medieval writing with an emphasis on charters writing and an introduction to the composition of these documents. The main part of the course will be devoted to practical writing. You will learn how to spell your hand, how to progress from the first letter to a full sentence. At the same time, you will get the necessary information to prepare scribal utensils (cutting a quill, boiling ink, etc.).

Italian initial and mineral pigments
The course is focused on initials in Italian style so-called bianchi girari and the production of colors from mineral pigments. You will paint initial typical for humanist works throughout the 15th century and learn how to mix your own natural colors for application on paper/parchment. We will work with lapis lazuli (blue), malachite (green), non-toxic vermilion (red) and 24kt leaf gold. You will leave the course with a gilded initial painted with mineral pigments on parchment.

Paint it white! Basic course of medieval painting
You will learn the theoretical and practical base for the preparation of the underground for panel painting so-called gesso. This gesso was also used in the production of furniture and shields. During the course we will look at the use of gesso in history and I will teach you how to prepare these materials yourself. I will show you how to prepare your own egg tempera and the basics of painting with this technique. You will take home one prepared panel for painting and the other panel with a small piece from the Viennese model book from the years 1410/1420.
